Unlike many other travelers my wife and I prefer more rural and remote locations rather than visiting cities. This preference held true for our explorations of Ireland and Northern Ireland. We did not do any sightseeing or photography in cities like Dublin, Belfast, Londonderry, Galway, Limerick or Cork. Instead we spent our time circumnavigating the island and visiting many locations not seen by the majority of tourists.

Images of Ireland contains three information sections. The first provides some observations about our trip and discusses some of our experiences. The second section provides readers with our daily itineraries. And, the last section features a wide range of photographs captured during our travels. These are organized by travel day.

Each photograph in Images of Ireland has corresponding location and EXIF data. Since we used Nikon 1 equipment for the majority of our images equivalent field-of-view (efov) is included for each photograph. This is intended to help readers plan their camera equipment should they be preparing for a trip to Ireland.

If you would like to get an idea of the route that our self-drive adventure followed, you can use Google maps to recreate our basic daily routes. This can be done by using the town/location details noted for each travel day. Our daily itineraries include time and distance estimates. These may differ from the sample routes you may create with Google maps as the ones we used went to and from specific accommodations. Where there are a number of possible routes between specific locations, we tended to drive on smaller roads that we closer to the coastline.

As is the case with all of our travel photography eBooks, all of our photographs were created on a ‘catch as catch can’ basis.  We took each day as it came and faced inclement weather from time to time. We primarily stayed in Bed & Breakfast accommodations so our schedule was somewhat constrained.

Most days our photography was done between 9 AM and 5 PM. Not ideal from a ‘golden hour’ perspective, but realistic for most travelers doing a self-drive holiday in Ireland. In that context we feel that the images contained in Images of Ireland are a good representation of what can be created photographically.

Images of Ireland primarily contains a mix of landscape and architectural photography. As you read through the eBook you may come across some specific images of interest. Being able to cross reference the travel day with our daily itineraries will allow readers to easily identify the part of Ireland where the photograph was created.

The objective of some of our photographs was to document the road conditions and topography experienced during our self-drive adventure. Some, like the images above, are not particularly photogenic, but they are accurate representations of our experiences. They also help to provide readers with a more balanced view of Ireland, rather than only seeing specific tourist sites.

We tried to bring some creativity to our photographic compositions, rather than simply create an eBook of “travel snapshots”.

We did our best to avoid including crowds of tourists in our photographs whenever possible. We felt this was important to give our readers a more visually enjoyable eBook experience.
