I was very fortunate today and was able to capture some images of a night heron landing. Photographing birds is always a bit of a hit or miss proposition. Sometimes Mother Nature cooperates, and sometimes not. Continue reading Photographing a Night Heron Landing
Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team at the CNE Air Show
Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the Canadian National Exhibition Air Show and photograph a number of different performers. One of my favourites is the Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team (CHAT). Continue reading Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team at the CNE Air Show
Nikon 1 V3 Bee Photography
Regardless of the camera system that each of us may own, it is always fun and insightful to do some experimentation with one’s gear. Since buying my Nikon 1 V3s I’ve been using them almost exclusively to capture images of birds. As a test I did some Nikon 1 V3 bee photography, using some extension tubes and a selection of 5 different lenses. Continue reading Nikon 1 V3 Bee Photography
Applying the Pareto Principle to Photography
Back in 1906 Wilfred Pareto created a mathematical formula that he used to explain the uneven distribution of wealth in Italy. Over time that formula became known as the Pareto Principle. Through the years it has been used to describe a wide range of situations. At its core Pareto Principle contains the 80/20 rule. It means that 80% of an outcome is created by 20% of the activities or inputs. This article discusses applying the Pareto Principle photography. While I use my three Nikon 1 prime lenses extensively for my client video work I almost never use them for still photography. For whatever reason I got the notion in my head to try photographing flowers with the 1 Nikon 32mm f/1.2 prime. Continue reading Photographing Flowers with the 1 Nikon 32mm f/1.2

This article discusses using more creative latitude of zoom lenses by considering a few, simple things. Continue reading Using more creative latitude of zoom lenses.
Some Cooperative Swallows
Sometimes Mother Nature sends a little gift when one is out photographing birds, which in my case were some cooperative swallows. All of the images in this article are displayed as 100% captures without any cropping as I wanted to demonstrate how close these birds allowed me to get to them. After a fire…
None of us really ever knows what lays ahead. We may feel completely secure in our current circumstances and relationships. Our career may appear on an upward trajectory. Our health is robust. Our friends and family strong and nurturing. We seem to breeze through each day with life unfolding as it has in the past. In a single moment, everything can change…and we are left wondering about the future after a fire has struck in our lives. It may be the loss of a loved one. A job. An ended relationship. A change in our health. A physical disaster, or other personal tragedy. Continue reading After a fire…
