Wood Duck Images with Nikon 1 V3

While I was out photographing some ducks in flight I happened upon a Wood Duck visiting La Salle Park in Burlington Ontario. This short article features some Wood Duck images captured hand-held with a Nikon 1 V3.

I had my Nikon 1 V3 set-up to capture birds-in-flight and since that was my main priority I didn’t bother changing my settings for the Wood Duck images.

This cute little visitor to La Salle Park kept on swimming in amongst groups of Mallards making it a bit tricky to get uncluttered images. I did my best to keep one eye on him, while I scanned the horizon for ducks and swans in flight.

Luckily my 1 Nikon CX 70-300 gives me quite good reach and I was able to get some decent close-up images.

I managed to capture these images with the late day sun at my back, waiting until the Wood Duck turned appropriately to get some nice highlights on it.

The next time I’m at La Salle Park I’ll watch for this little guy as I’ve seen him a couple of times in the past. I’ll use a slower shutter speed next time, so I can lower my ISO to get better detail and colours.

Technical Note:
All images were captured hand-held in available light using a Nikon 1 V3, 1 Nikon CX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR zoom lens. All images were produced from RAW files using my standard process of DxO OpticsPro 11, CS6 and the Nik Collection.

  1. a significant number of them in our general vicinity either. There has been one at La Salle Park sporadically finished the past number of week which is the reason it was such a treat to snatch some fast pictures.

    1. Hi Monalisa,
We may have seen the same wood duck as the images in the article were captured at La Salle Park.

  2. I love wood ducks! The color and detail are fabulous on these!

There use to be a pair of these ducks that nested by a small pond on my road for a few years in a row. But I have not seen them there again.

    1. Hi Joni,

We don’t see that many of them in our area either. There has been one at La Salle Park sporadically over the past number of week which is why it was such a treat to grab some quick images.
