During my recent trip to Cuba I was able to capture a number of images of a green heron fishing and flying at 15 fps with my Nikon 1 V2 and 1 Nikon CX 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6. Continue reading Green Heron fishing and flying at 15fps

Capturing images of geese in flight
Capturing images of geese in flight is often how many photographers begin to develop their BIF technique. Geese make ideal subjects since they are large, slower flying birds. Their flight patterns tend to be in reasonably straight lines and they often announce their approach with a chorus of honking, allowing us to get prepared to take some photographs of them. Practicing bird-in-flight images with gulls
If you’re like me you likely have captured hundreds, if not thousands, of images of sea gulls in flight. It’s not that these birds are all that photogenic, but practicing bird-in-flight images with gulls is a good way to maintain our skill level. Continue reading Practicing bird-in-flight images with gulls
Vultures at Niagara Gorge
This week I had the opportunity to shoot a few images of vultures with one of our readers, Ray Miller. He has been kind enough to provide our readers with some of his favourite photographic locations in the Niagara area and once again shared his expertise. There are quite a few vultures at the Niagara Gorge and they can be easily viewed and photographed from the Locust Grove Picnic Area. Continue reading Vultures at Niagara Gorge
Hummingbirds in flight with Nikon 1
I’ve been burning the midnight oil recently with client work and I really needed a break. So, I spent a couple of hours on Saturday morning at Ruthven Park in Cayuga Ontario with the intention of capturing some images of hummingbirds in flight with my Nikon 1 gear. Continue reading Hummingbirds in flight with Nikon 1
Cormorants in flight with Nikon 1 J5
From time to time I like to go out on a limb and try something experimental just for fun. Before I get too far into this article I’d like to thank one of our readers (and a fellow photography writer) Ross Chevalier for sparking the idea for this article (you can check out his site here). In one of his comments Ross suggested that it may be possible to use elastic bands to affix a Hoodman or Zacuto Z-Finder to a Nikon 1 J5 and create a viewfinder. Sounded like an interesting idea to me so I tried it, then went out to photograph some cormorants in flight with the Nikon 1 J5. Continue reading Cormorants in flight with Nikon 1 J5
Osprey in flight
Both professional and amateur bird photographers often have their favourite subjects – and many have a special affinity for birds of prey. I was extremely fortunate to capture a range of images of osprey in flight during a recent morning visit to Mountsberg Conservation Area, near Campbellville Ontario. Continue reading Osprey in flight
Blackbird Chasing a Hawk
If we’re lucky from time to time we get the opportunity to capture an interesting bit of nature playing out before our eyes. I had one such opportunity on Saturday afternoon when I was able to photograph a blackbird chasing a hawk in flight. Continue reading Blackbird Chasing a Hawk
Brown Pelicans in Flight with Nikon 1
Earlier this year my wife and I went to the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina for a brief holiday. I had the opportunity to capture a few images of brown pelicans in flight with my Nikon 1 V2 and Nikon 1 CX 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 VR zoom lens. Continue reading Brown Pelicans in Flight with Nikon 1
Photographing hummingbirds in flight without using flash
Most people who enjoy taking images of birds will attest to the fact that it can be especially challenging to photograph hummingbirds. Continue reading Photographing hummingbirds in flight without using flash
