Many Nikon 1 owners have been in a quandary for the past several years, unsure of what to do with their camera gear given the uncertainty that has surrounded the Nikon 1 system. Some people are taking a ‘wait and see’ approach. Other photographers have sold their Nikon 1 gear and moved on to a different system, frequently migrating to M4/3. Some folks have decided to add to their Nikon 1 kit to try to ‘future proof’ it as best they can. There is no right answer as everyone needs to make the best decision based on their specific camera needs. I’ve been adding to my Nikon 1 kit for the past couple of years and I’m doubling down on the 1 Nikon CX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom lens. Continue reading Doubling Down on the 1 Nikon CX 70-300

The Risk of Buying from an Unapproved Vendor
I recently dropped off a couple of my lenses for service at Nikon Canada and observed the risk of buying camera gear from an unapproved vendor. Continue reading The Risk of Buying from an Unapproved Vendor
The Benefits of Reach at Mount Rushmore
When we discuss the ‘reach’ of our camera gear we often do so in the context of nature, and more specifically bird photography. During a trip in 2016 I had the opportunity to reap the benefits of reach at Mount Rushmore. Continue reading The Benefits of Reach at Mount Rushmore
Are you ‘at one’ with your camera gear?
I don’t know if it is a positive or a negative that I’m not a ‘gear head’ when it comes to camera equipment. I suppose this blog would have a much bigger audience if I spent my time doing numerous reviews of camera bodies and lenses. No doubt these kinds of technical insights are extremely important to a large portion of the photographic community. But…that’s just not me. I think a bigger and more important question is, “Are you ‘at one’ with your camera gear?” Continue reading Are you ‘at one’ with your camera gear?

Buying camera gear, especially for beginners and novices, or when considering “downsizing” one’s gear, can be a daunting task. Photographing small sea shells with Nikon 1 J4
Sometimes plans go awry and we end up experimenting in ways we didn’t originally plan. So it was for me today. I was going to test my new Nikon 1 J4 with extension tubes at the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory, but discovered the facility is closed all next week. So instead I ended up photographing some small sea shells at home. Continue reading Photographing small sea shells with Nikon 1 J4
A morning walk with the Nikon 1 J4
I recently purchased a Nikon 1 J4 kit with the 10-30 mm PD zoom, and a Nikon 1 WP-N3 underwater housing. I bought both at very attractive prices with the intent of using the combination for occasional underwater images and video, as well as an inclement weather option for travel and landscape photography. Earlier today I went out for a morning walk with the Nikon 1 J4 and captured a few images. Continue reading A morning walk with the Nikon 1 J4
Zoom lenses to create a Nikon 1 Trinity
Regardless of the camera format that I’ve owned I’ve always preferred to use zoom lenses for still photography. Since I now shoot exclusively with the Nikon 1 system I thought it may be fun to write an article on my pick of lenses for an ‘unofficial’ Nikon 1 trinity.
