Even though the conditions were dismal yesterday morning I went out under heavy, overcast skies with a light mist falling, and was able to capture some images of a gull airborne at 60 fps.

This article features 6 images taken mid-stream from a 30 frame burst, shot hand-held at 60 fps. It is important to remember that it only took my Nikon 1 V2 only 1/10th of a second to capture all 6 images in this article

When shooting at 60 fps with a Nikon 1 camera only the first frame will utilize auto-focus, with that frame locking focus for all subsequent images in the same burst.

When using the 60 fps feature of a Nikon 1 camera it is important to choose subjects appropriately so that it stays in focus as long as possible.
The image above happens to be my favourite from the six displayed in this article…although I do like all of the first three.

I chose the six consecutively captured photographs in this article to demonstrate the nuances that can be captured between images when using this fast 60 fps frame rate.

I will be doing some additional experimentation later this week and will be sharing the results of those future experiments with you.

My initial reaction is that the 60 fps setting on a Nikon 1 camera is extremely useful for bird photography. I will certainly be using it on a regular basis. I’ll have some recommendations on this a bit later in the series of articles that I’ll be writing.

Hi Thomas,
Great Images. Are these images extracted from the video you have posted or are these captured on camera?
Hi Srikant,
The images are full resolution stills captured at 60fps. When using this setting with a Nikon 1 body the first frame locks focus for the balance of the burst.
