Bird Photography Camera Settings
One of the pastimes that many photographers enjoy is bird photography, both birds-in-flight and perched birds. How one chooses to use a camera is a personal decision and there isn’t a single ‘best way’ of doing things. This article outlines some bird photography camera settings that folks may consider. V3 Sample Birds-in-flight Images
We finally had some decent sunshine that coincided with my schedule so I was able to go out and capture some Nikon 1 V3 images of birds-in-flight during the last couple of days. Continue reading V3 Sample Birds-in-flight Images
Changes to Nikon 1 V3 BIF Technique
I’ve had my Nikon 1 V3 for about a week and a half and finally got the opportunity to go out and shoot with it with a bit of sun in the sky. Not much mind you…but at least it wasn’t totally overcast. I took about 45 minutes out of my rather hectic schedule to experiment shooting birds-in-flight (BIF) at Grimsby harbour. I ended up making some changes to my Nikon 1 V3 BIF technique this morning and got a lot more keepers with these adjustments. Continue reading Changes to Nikon 1 V3 BIF Technique
New Zealand Sea Birds and Mammals
My wife and I recently returned from a ‘bucket list’ trip to New Zealand where we did field work for an upcoming e-book we have planned for 2017. While our focus was on landscape photography I did manage to capture a few images of New Zealand sea birds and mammals. Continue reading New Zealand Sea Birds and Mammals
Leafhopper with 30-110mm
While at the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory I noticed a few unusual insects on some of the foliage and took some close-up images of them with a Nikon 1 J5, 1 Nikon 30-110 mm and MOVO extension tubes. I followed up with the folks at the conservatory and discovered that the insects were leafhoppers. Continue reading Leafhopper with 30-110mm
Bird Kingdom Return Visit

Hummingbird Clearwing Moth 60fps
A few days ago I was in my backyard waiting in vain for a hummingbird to visit when I noticed something hovering around one of our butterfly bushes. I grabbed my camera and went to investigate. Rather than photographing a hummingbird at 60 fps as I had planned, Mother Nature sent a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth instead. Continue reading Hummingbird Clearwing Moth 60fps
Listening to my little voice
I’m not sure how many other people have a ‘connection’ to a source of intuition and such. I’ve had a ‘little voice’ that has helped to guide my life for over 4 decades. Sometimes the messages I get are quite serious, like the one that allowed me to avoid what could have been a life-ending car accident some 30 years ago. Others, like the one I got today, lead to far less serious but enjoyable consequences. Continue reading Listening to my little voice
Purple Martin in flight
I went out this morning with the intention of trying to capture some images of hummingbirds in flight. Sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate and I didn’t see any hummingbirds at all this morning. Instead I ended up trying to photograph some Purple Martin in flight. Continue reading Purple Martin in flight
