A friend of mine recently took delivery of a new Nikon 1 J5 with two kit lenses, the 10-30 mm PD zoom and 30-110 mm f/3.8-5.6 zoom. We visited the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory this morning to help him get some practice time with his new gear. I’ll be posting a few articles based on the images I took this morning. This one features a selection of 30-110 mm plant macro images. Continue reading 30-110mm Plant Macro Images

Ignore ‘Must Have’ Gear Advice
Like most photographers I’ve experienced bouts of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), with some of it induced by listening to the advice of others. I don’t know what your experiences have been. Mine have led me to the conclusion that the best thing for me to do is to simply ignore ‘must have’ gear advice from others, each and every time I hear it. Bird Kingdom Return Visit
Earlier this week I had the opportunity to do a Bird Kingdom return visit, allowing me to get a bit more practice photographing perched birds and a few other critters with my Nikon 1 J5. Continue reading Bird Kingdom Return Visit
Hummingbird Clearwing Moth 60fps
A few days ago I was in my backyard waiting in vain for a hummingbird to visit when I noticed something hovering around one of our butterfly bushes. I grabbed my camera and went to investigate. Continue reading White Balance Impact on Sunset Images
Listening to my little voice
I’m not sure how many other people have a ‘connection’ to a source of intuition and such. I’ve had a ‘little voice’ that has helped to guide my life for over 4 decades. Sometimes the messages I get are quite serious, like the one that allowed me to avoid what could have been a life-ending car accident some 30 years ago. Others, like the one I got today, lead to far less serious but enjoyable consequences. Continue reading Listening to my little voice
Nikon 1 System Update
It has been over a year since I published the “What’s in my bag: Nikon 1” article. Since a few things have changed, I thought an update on my Nikon 1 system components would be in order, especially since my Nikon 1 gear no longer fits in just one bag! Continue reading Nikon 1 System Update
Purple Martin in flight
I went out this morning with the intention of trying to capture some images of hummingbirds in flight. Sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate and I didn’t see any hummingbirds at all this morning. Instead I ended up trying to photograph some Purple Martin in flight. Continue reading Purple Martin in flight
Backyard Beauty
Like many folks I often venture out away from home to capture photographs of various plants and flowers. Recently I reminded myself that all I have to do is open the patio door to find some backyard beauty to photograph. Continue reading Backyard Beauty
Using corner exits in garden photography
In an earlier article the idea of corner exits as a composition tool was introduced. This article demonstrates some examples of using corner exits in garden photography. Continue reading Using corner exits in garden photography
