Yesterday evening I happened to look out from the window of my home office. The sky was almost aflame in a spectacular sunset. I quickly grabbed a camera, jumped in the car and headed off to the harbour, hoping to catch it in all of its glory. Arriving about 4 minutes later I discovered that I was too late. Although disappointed, experience has taught me to always look to the north and east as some alternative sunset images are sometimes possible. Continue reading Alternative sunset images

Composition Tip: Overlapping Elements
As photographers we can fall into patterns of behaviour with our compositions. Breaking out of it can be as simple as changing our perspective and overlapping elements in our images. Continue reading Composition Tip: Overlapping Elements
Fun in bright sun
As photographers we often talk about light.,,the magic hour…mood. Some folks get up before dawn specifically to capture special moments created by light. Sometimes we are out and about with our cameras during mid-day and we forget that we can also have a lot of fun in bright sun. Continue reading Fun in bright sun

A morning walk with the Nikon 1 J4
I recently purchased a Nikon 1 J4 kit with the 10-30 mm PD zoom, and a Nikon 1 WP-N3 underwater housing. I bought both at very attractive prices with the intent of using the combination for occasional underwater images and video, as well as an inclement weather option for travel and landscape photography. Earlier today I went out for a morning walk with the Nikon 1 J4 and captured a few images. Continue reading A morning walk with the Nikon 1 J4

When I’m out creating landscape images I often find angles and the alignment of elements in a scene intriguing. Continue reading Angles and alignment in landscape photography
Niagara Glen Nature Reserve

Even though the leaves were well past their prime I spent a very enjoyable morning this week hiking at Niagara Glen Nature Reserve with one of our readers, Ray Miller. It’s always a great experience to go out with someone like Ray who is very familiar with the area. Continue reading Niagara Glen Nature Reserve
Lakeside park in fog
After spending the morning doing some landscape photography in the Niagara area I hit some dense fog on my way home. Shooting landscape photos under foggy conditions is one of my favourite things to do so I couldn’t resist getting off the highway and finding a good spot to capture some images. I ended up at Charles Daley Park which is located on Lake Ontario in the town of Lincoln. What follows is a selection of images of this lakeside park in fog. Continue reading Lakeside park in fog
