Capturing images of geese in flight is often how many photographers begin to develop their BIF technique. Geese make ideal subjects since they are large, slower flying birds. Their flight patterns tend to be in reasonably straight lines and they often announce their approach with a chorus of honking, allowing us to get prepared to take some photographs of them. Birds-of-prey visiting my backyard
Sometimes if we are really lucky we don’t have to go very far to spot birds-of-prey. This short article features some images of birds-of-prey that were recently visiting my backyard in Grimsby, Ontario. Continue reading Birds-of-prey visiting my backyard

Photo opportunities at Dufferin Islands
Niagara Falls is one of the top tourist destinations in North America with magnificent waterfalls on both the American and Canadian sides. Tourists also typically visit many of the attractions like Bird Kingdom, Ripley’s and a host of other locations. One of the most overlooked areas is Dufferin Islands which are only a 10 minute walk from the falls on the Canadian side. Continue reading Photo opportunities at Dufferin Islands
Practicing bird-in-flight images with gulls
If you’re like me you likely have captured hundreds, if not thousands, of images of sea gulls in flight. It’s not that these birds are all that photogenic, but practicing bird-in-flight images with gulls is a good way to maintain our skill level. Images of Butterflies Feeding
I recently purchased a set of Movo extension tubes for Nikon 1 and I went out today to the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory to do a bit of fieldwork for my corresponding review. In the process of doing that work I was able to capture some unusual images that I thought I’d share with readers in advance of my extension tube review.
As many of you know I like to push things a bit from time to time and after a bit of shooting at the Conservatory I decided to link all three Movo Extension tubes together (10 mm, 16 mm, 21 mm) to see what would happen. Well…it ended up being quite an interesting couple of hours and I was able to capture a few images of butterflies feeding. Continue reading Images of Butterflies Feeding
Bird Portraiture
One of the things that I love about facilities like Bird Kingdom in Niagara Falls is the variety and character of the birds. Some of them seem to have human-like qualities and I find their faces can be very expressive.
I had the opportunity on Wednesday to visit Bird Kingdom with two of our readers, Don and Janice Berman, and spend a number of very enjoyable hours photographing various bird specimens. My focus with my most recent visit was to get as many tight-in images as I could – bird portraitures – for lack of a better description. Continue reading Bird Portraiture
Goose Beating Wings at 15fps
Sometimes we just happen to be at the right place at the right time to capture some images. That was certainly the case on Wednesday this week when I visited the Dufferin Islands at Niagara Falls Ontario and managed to capture a large, white goose beating its wings. Luckily I had my Nikon 1 V2 set for AF-C at 15 fps with subject tracking. So, here is a series of images of a goose beating its wings at 15 fps. Continue reading Goose Beating Wings at 15fps
