On Saturday morning I was out at Ruthven Park in Cayuga Ontario. My intent was to photograph some hummingbirds or purple martins in flight. When nature did not cooperate I looked around for another challenge and ended up photographing bees in-flight, hand-held. Continue reading Photographing Bees In-Flight Hand-Held
ISO-12800 Comparison
I had quite a few comments from Photography Life readers about my recent article Pushing a Small 1″ Sensor to ISO-12800. Some folks asked if they could see a comparison between the finished images in the article and the original RAW files (i.e. I opened up the RAW files in CS6 and made a jpeg out of them without making any adjustments in CS6). This short article shows the ISO-12800 comparison between the original RAW files and the finished files I used in the article. Continue reading ISO-12800 Comparison
Are you ‘at one’ with your camera gear?
I don’t know if it is a positive or a negative that I’m not a ‘gear head’ when it comes to camera equipment. I suppose this blog would have a much bigger audience if I spent my time doing numerous reviews of camera bodies and lenses. No doubt these kinds of technical insights are extremely important to a large portion of the photographic community. But…that’s just not me. Continue reading Dealing With Bright Sunlight in Post Using TAB

Photographing Swallows in Flight Using AF-A
This short article features some test images captured while photographing swallows in flight using AF-A (Auto-Select AF) with Auto-area. If you’re like me, you may find photographing small, erratically-flying birds like swallows very challenging. This article features some initial test images with aggressive cropping used throughout…so be forewarned that image quality isn’t what I would ideally want. Continue reading Photographing Swallows in Flight Using AF-A

Going on a Sidney Whale Watching tour was one of the reasons that my wife and I decided on a brief vacation on the Saanich Peninsula of British Columbia. I had done some research and discovered that there are some resident pods of Orcas living in the area. Continue reading Sidney Whale Watching
