On Labour Day weekend I had the opportunity to capture some images during the 2016 CNE Air Show in Toronto, Canada. Continue reading 2016 CNE Air Show Aircraft Images
Photographing butterflies with a minimum of gear
There is something inherently liberating about photographing butterflies with a minimum of gear. As they flit about I can easily follow them without being bogged down by a ton of gear. Continue reading Photographing butterflies with a minimum of gear
Leafhopper with 30-110mm
While at the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory I noticed a few unusual insects on some of the foliage and took some close-up images of them with a Nikon 1 J5, 1 Nikon 30-110 mm and MOVO extension tubes. I followed up with the folks at the conservatory and discovered that the insects were leafhoppers. Continue reading Leafhopper with 30-110mm
30-110mm Plant Macro Images
A friend of mine recently took delivery of a new Nikon 1 J5 with two kit lenses, the 10-30 mm PD zoom and 30-110 mm f/3.8-5.6 zoom. We visited the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory this morning to help him get some practice time with his new gear. I’ll be posting a few articles based on the images I took this morning. This one features a selection of 30-110 mm plant macro images. Continue reading 30-110mm Plant Macro Images
Ignore ‘Must Have’ Gear Advice
Like most photographers I’ve experienced bouts of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), with some of it induced by listening to the advice of others. I don’t know what your experiences have been. Mine have led me to the conclusion that the best thing for me to do is to simply ignore ‘must have’ gear advice from others, each and every time I hear it. Continue reading Ignore ‘Must Have’ Gear Advice
Bird Kingdom Return Visit
Earlier this week I had the opportunity to do a Bird Kingdom return visit, allowing me to get a bit more practice photographing perched birds and a few other critters with my Nikon 1 J5. Continue reading Bird Kingdom Return Visit
Hummingbird Clearwing Moth 60fps
A few days ago I was in my backyard waiting in vain for a hummingbird to visit when I noticed something hovering around one of our butterfly bushes. I grabbed my camera and went to investigate. Rather than photographing a hummingbird at 60 fps as I had planned, Mother Nature sent a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth instead. Continue reading Hummingbird Clearwing Moth 60fps
White Balance Impact on Sunset Images
Photographing sunsets is something that most photographers enjoy. Some folks who choose to shoot in jpeg sometimes find it a challenge to get their sunset images to look dramatic. The is especially true if they do not make any adjustments in post. This article shows some simple examples of how changing white balance and adjusting exposure compensation can impact sunset images. Continue reading White Balance Impact on Sunset Images
Listening to my little voice
I’m not sure how many other people have a ‘connection’ to a source of intuition and such. I’ve had a ‘little voice’ that has helped to guide my life for over 4 decades. Sometimes the messages I get are quite serious, like the one that allowed me to avoid what could have been a life-ending car accident some 30 years ago. Others, like the one I got today, lead to far less serious but enjoyable consequences. Continue reading Listening to my little voice
Nikon 1 System Update
It has been over a year since I published the “What’s in my bag: Nikon 1” article. Since a few things have changed, I thought an update on my Nikon 1 system components would be in order, especially since my Nikon 1 gear no longer fits in just one bag! Continue reading Nikon 1 System Update
