Heron Catching a Snake
This article features a selection of images documenting a heron catching a snake at one of the ponds at Hendrie Valley. These photographs were captured in a 24 minute time frame… counted from when the heron first attacked the snake until it flew off with its catch.
These images are graphic and may not be appropriate for folks who are squeamish about some of the brutality found in nature.
Micro HHFS TG-5 images
This article features a selection of micro HHFS TG-5 images of plants, flowers and midges captured handheld in my yard. I had a lot of fun pushing my Olympus TG-5 Tough with these handheld in-camera focus stacked (HHFS) micro photographs.
This was one of the few times that I can remember trying the in-camera focus stacking option when shooting in Microscope mode. All images featured in this article are displayed without any cropping at all.
6 Years. No Regrets
This month marks 6 years since my wife and I decided to take the plunge and switch to Olympus/OM System M4/3 equipment. After countless hours in the field capturing hundreds of thousands of images, we can honestly say that we have absolutely no regrets about making this change.
HHFS Macro Flower Images

First Swallows of 2025
The first swallows of 2025 have returned to Biggar Lagoon Wetlands in Grimsby, and were welcomed by a good number of bird watchers and a few photographers.
HHFS Butterfly Images
In preparation for the upcoming spring/summer outdoor macro photography season, I recently got in some practice with HHFS (handheld focus stacked) butterfly images at the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory.
DxO Smart Lighting
DxO Smart Lighting is an adjustment that I use with all of my RAW files, regardless of the subject matter in my photographs. I can’t comment on the use of this function with larger sensor cameras, but I can say that I’ve found this tool to be very useful with all of my images captured with smaller sensor cameras like Nikon 1 and Olympus/OM System M4/3 equipment.
Photographing Thermal Mud Pools
Photographing thermal mud pools can be challenging when attempting to capture erratic mud bursts breaking on the surface of the pool. Technology like Pro Capture can allow photographers to capture a wide selection of useable images at this type of venue with a very high confidence level.
