As photographers it is good for us to remember that specs aren’t everything when it comes to buying and effectively using camera gear. Like other folks I’ve learned some lessons the hard way. Fortunately those lessons didn’t cost me a huge amount of money. It is critical that each of us buy and use whatever format and brand of camera gear best meets our individual needs.

Bird Photography with 75-300
This weekend I went out to LaSalle Park and captured some bird photography with the M.Zuiko 75-300 mm f/4.8-6.7 II zoom lens. I appreciate that some readers would like to see more samples of bird photography captured with affordable gear like the M.Zuiko 75-300 mm f/4.8-6.7 II zoom lens… so I made some time to do so on Saturday.
The weather was grey, dull and overcast. Far from the kind of conditions that I would typically favour… but ideal to do some camera and lens testing! So, I grabbed my wife’s E-M1 Mark III fitted it with the M.Zuiko 75-300 mm zoom… then headed off to LaSalle Park.
Handheld Macro
This article discusses handheld macro photography and why I prefer using my Olympus E-M1X and M.Zuiko 60 mm macro lens over the full frame gear I owned in the past.
As regular readers know, I very much dislike using a tripod and only do so when it’s absolutely necessary. In the past when I tried to create handheld macro images with my full frame equipment I would very seldom get any useable images. I simply could not hold my full frame equipment steady enough. It was an exercise in frustration. My full frame gear always seemed to get in the way of my creativity.
BIF Boredom
Regardless of how much we may enjoy photographing birds-in-flight there is a risk that BIF boredom can set in from time to time. On a personal basis I find this risk most often surfaces during late fall/early winter and during the hottest summer months. During these time periods we are in-between major bird migration movements. As a result the overall variety and number of birds can be reduced. The local species that remain may seem uninteresting to us from a photographic perspective.
Completing the Vision
As photographers we understand that completing the vision involves doing some work with our images in post processing. Each of us has our own skill level and approach when it comes to post processing, as well as our preferred software programs. We have a very specific vision in our minds for how we want our finished photograph to appear and often capture an image as an interim step towards that vision.
Getting to Infinity
Often when it comes to landscape photography, one of our primary concerns is finding the best way of getting to infinity in terms of depth-of-field. In our quest to getting to infinity, we also need to think about the required shutter speed given any movement caused by wind, as well as our ISO value. As we all know, the higher the ISO value used, the less dynamic range we will have available for our photographs.
Making a Difference
When it comes to making a difference we often think about famous people who are in the news, or individuals who hold positions of power in society. Sometimes making a difference can be negative if the differences that are created are steeped in selfishness, hate, racism, misogyny, or xenophobia. When we truly are making a difference it results in increasing understanding, empathy and love.
Hawk Taking Flight
This article features 15 consecutive Pro Capture H images of a Sharp-shinned hawk taking flight in my backyard. My wife noticed the hawk landing on the pergola at the rear of our yard and called out to me. All I had time to do was grab my camera from the family room and quickly capture this image run through my kitchen window.
Getting The Shot
When it comes to our choice of camera equipment, the only thing that ultimately matters is ‘getting the shot’… regardless of the brand of gear used. Many internet chat rooms and YouTube channels still seem glutted with discussions/arguments about camera specifications and the relative advantages or disadvantages of various camera models.
