This article features some images of a juvenile Bald Eagle captured handheld during a recent visit to the Big Creek National Wildlife Area. Last week a friend and I were exploring some birding areas on the north east shore of Lake Erie, when we unexpectedly came upon a juvenile bald eagle.
First Swallows of 2023
This article features a selection of images of the first swallows of 2023 to arrive in our area of Southern Ontario. During the past few years I’ve spent a reasonable amount of time photographing these pocket rockets with some success… so I was looking forward to their arrival this spring.
Flower Macro Images
This article features a selection of uncropped flower macro images which were recently captured handheld at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington Ontario.
As photographers we typically compose our images to avoid any kind of cropping if at all possible. This helps ensure that we can get as many pixels as possible on our subject matter. Some photographic genres are more difficult than others when it comes to capturing full frames, and avoiding any cropping. Handheld in-field macro photography can be tricky at times.

E-M1X 4 Year Review
This is my E-M1X 4 year review, which is based on extensive hands-on experience using this camera and a selection of M.Zuiko lenses. During this period we’ve all faced COVID-19 challenges which have limited some of our photographic opportunities, or even curtailed them at times. Through all of that I’ve managed to capture hundreds of thousands of handheld images. My two remaining tripods and a monopod have been collecting dust in my gear closet since I bought my first E-M1X.
Shooting Through Glass
As photographers many of us face the challenge of shooting through glass as it may be the only option we have to create a particular image. While this is not an ideal condition there’s a few simple things we can do to minimize the effects of shooting though glass.
Frogs with 2 Tubes
This article features some close up images of frogs captured handheld with 2 extension tubes and the M.Zuiko PRO 40-150 mm f/2.8 zoom lens. As photographers we sometimes only consider a macro lens when planning to do some close up or macro photography. We forget that fitting a good quality zoom lens with extension tubes can create a very flexible and capable set-up for close up photography.
Moving Forward
Photographers were visibly shaken this week with the announcement that DPReview has been cancelled by Amazon, its parent company. The website will remain active until April 10, 2023.
Photographic Rabbit Hole
A photographic rabbit hole exists, and if you choose to go down it you’re pretty much guaranteed to sub-optimize your small sensor camera’s capabilities. That photographic rabbit hole is equivalency.
