This article features a selection of handheld photographs that document tree swallows diving at the large pond at Biggar Lagoon Wetlands in Grimsby Ontario. Folks who have attempted to photograph tree swallows in flight can attest to the fact that these diminutive birds are fast and erratic flyers. I often refer to them as ‘pocket rockets’.

Right Place Right Time
As nature and bird photographers we sometimes overlook the importance of being in the right place at the right time. Often our attention is overly focused on camera gear. We can spend hours debating the relative merits of camera format, brand, model and lenses used. If we care about our craft we’ll invest time in skills development like our eye/hand coordination. All of that goes for naught if we aren’t at the right place at the right time to capture our images.
Close-Up Flower Images
This article features a selection of close-up flower images captured handheld using the M.Zuiko PRO 40-150 mm f/2.8 zoom lens along with a pair of extension tubes. In-camera focus stacking was used for all images.
Many photographers have an interest doing close-up photography from time to time, but find it hard to justify purchasing a dedicated macro lens. Using extension tubes with a zoom lens can be a good option for many people as this type of combination can provide a good deal of flexibility.
Digital Teleconverter Test Images
This article shares a selection of digital teleconverter test images that were captured handheld today at 40 Mile Creek in Grimsby, using an E-M1X and M.Zuiko 100-400 zoom lens. During the 4 years that I’ve been using Olympus gear I haven’t paid too much attention to the digital teleconverter technology in my E-M1X.
Juvenile Bald Eagle
This article features some images of a juvenile Bald Eagle captured handheld during a recent visit to the Big Creek National Wildlife Area. Last week a friend and I were exploring some birding areas on the north east shore of Lake Erie, when we unexpectedly came upon a juvenile bald eagle.
First Swallows of 2023
This article features a selection of images of the first swallows of 2023 to arrive in our area of Southern Ontario. During the past few years I’ve spent a reasonable amount of time photographing these pocket rockets with some success… so I was looking forward to their arrival this spring.
Flower Macro Images
This article features a selection of uncropped flower macro images which were recently captured handheld at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington Ontario.
As photographers we typically compose our images to avoid any kind of cropping if at all possible. This helps ensure that we can get as many pixels as possible on our subject matter. Some photographic genres are more difficult than others when it comes to capturing full frames, and avoiding any cropping. Handheld in-field macro photography can be tricky at times.

E-M1X 4 Year Review
This is my E-M1X 4 year review, which is based on extensive hands-on experience using this camera and a selection of M.Zuiko lenses. During this period we’ve all faced COVID-19 challenges which have limited some of our photographic opportunities, or even curtailed them at times. Through all of that I’ve managed to capture hundreds of thousands of handheld images. My two remaining tripods and a monopod have been collecting dust in my gear closet since I bought my first E-M1X.
Frogs with 2 Tubes
This article features some close up images of frogs captured handheld with 2 extension tubes and the M.Zuiko PRO 40-150 mm f/2.8 zoom lens. As photographers we sometimes only consider a macro lens when planning to do some close up or macro photography. We forget that fitting a good quality zoom lens with extension tubes can create a very flexible and capable set-up for close up photography.
