Accomplishment in life can be found in a wide range of areas including family, volunteerism, creativity, career and business to name a few. It is common to hold up the accomplishments of others as sources of inspiration or motivation for our own goals and dreams. Sometimes our adulation of others is misguided.
Auto Focus Considerations
This article discusses some basic auto focus considerations and was prompted by a few emails that I recently received from readers. Some of these emails had questions that were specific to the OM-1. Since I have never used this camera, and have no plans to do any kind of review on it, I’m unable to comment specifically on that model.
Harbour Grace Composition Considerations
This article shares some Harbour Grace composition considerations that came into play when we visited this town during our trip to Newfoundland. As history buffs may know Amelia Earhart was the first woman pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. This historic event took flight from the air strip at Harbour Grace.
Year 10
It feels almost surreal to think that January 1, 2024 will mark the start of year 10 of this photography website. It has been a very interesting journey to say the least. We’ve certainly grown our subscriber base over the years, and it’s now quite possible that many of our newer subscribers may not be aware of what led to the creation of this website.
This article provides some background on how this website came to be, as well as discussing our plans for year 10 and beyond.
Importance of Shutter Speed
The importance of shutter speed is something that we can sometimes undervalue by attempting to use ISO values that are too low when creating photographs. While this can be appropriate in specific situations, using a low ISO and sacrificing shutter speed as a trade-off, can be problematic.
Ryan Premises
Earlier this year my wife and I visited the Ryan Premises National Historic Site as part of our Newfoundland photography mini tour. This was not one of our original planned stops. Since we were facing yet another wet and foggy day, we decided to do some indoor photography and learn about some of the history of this area of Newfoundland at this National Historic Site.

Working a Scene
If time permits, working a scene can be very beneficial in terms of helping to train ourselves to look at a variety of composition options. This article features a selection of images captured at the Western Brook Pond Tour departure area. The objective is simply to illustrate how a specific subject can be incorporated into a composition in a number of different ways. All of the images featured in this article were captured with the M.Zuiko PRO 12-100 mm f/4 IS zoom.
Pumpkin Creativity
This article shares over two dozen images of pumpkin creativity that were on display in our local town on the evening of November 1st. The event, Grimsby Glows Pumpkin Parade, was presented by the Rotary Club of Grimsby.
Happenstance
Happenstance can be defined as a chance situation. Or something that occurred because of particular circumstances, although it was not planned. As photographers we are often beneficiaries of happenstance. This is regularly the case with bird photography.
