Some of us find inspiration in small details in the world around us.

We may find strong lines and an absence of everyday hustle and bustle intriguing.

For some, street photography may not focus on people, but rather on signage and services offered in unique graphic ways.

NIKON 1 V2 + 6.7-13.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 @ ISO 400, 1/100, f/5.6

We may stumble across oddities or items that have been adapted and utilized in unusual ways.

We may find inspiration in the finely crafted componentry of mechanical creations.

NIKON 1 V2 + NIKON 1 CX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 170.1mm, ISO 1600, 1/800, f/5.3

We may find visual serenity and calmness in nature.

Nikon 1 V3 + Nikon 1 CX 70-300, f/5.6, 1/800, ISO-1600, 229mm, efov 618mm

A seldom seen physical detail may bring us inside a subject.

NIKON 1 V2 + 1 NIKON 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 157.2mm, ISO 3200, 1/8, f/5.6

The emotions of a captive being may reach out to us.

NIKON 1 V2 + 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 @ 110mm, ISO 800, 1/160, f/5.6

Strong contrasts may focus our attention, and highlight the beauty of a carved creation.

Nikon 1 J5 + Nikon 1 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 @ 57mm, efov 154mm, f/4.2, 1/125, ISO-3200

The patterns and visual flows of nature can command our attention.

Nikon 1 V2 + Nikon 1 CX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 300mm (efov 810mm), f/5.6, 1/3200, ISO-720

Precise moments found in nature can remind us how everything in life is interconnected.

Nikon 1 V2 + Nikon 1 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 non-PD, 20mm, efov 54mm, f/5.6, 1/30, ISO-450

We may see flowing lines in objects that are hard and metallic.

Nikon 1 V2 + 1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 @ 12mm, efov 32mm, f/6.3, 1.6 sec, ISO-160

Experimenting with shutter speed and camera movement may ignite our creativity in a new way.

Witnessing the finality and brutality of nature may compel us to capture the moment.

NIKON 1 V2 + 1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 @ 25.7mm, ISO 160, 1/80, f/6.3

The impermanence of things around us may serve as a metaphor for our own journeys of self-discovery… as superficial layers are peeled away.

Nikon 1 V2 + 1 Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 300mm, efov 810mm, f/5.6, 1/250, ISO-1100

Our need to form relationships and bonds may manifest in how we document nature.

Nikon 1 J5 + 1 Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 70mm, efov 189mm, f/5, +0.3 step, 1/200, ISO-3200

Reflective views may encourage us to examine ourselves more intensely and encourage deeper self-understanding.

Nikon 1 J5 + 1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 @ 10mm, efov 27mm, f/8, 1/400, ISO-160

Finding our creative pathways involves observing things and events as they break through our awareness.

Nikon 1 J5 + 1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 @ 10mm, efov 27mm, f/8, 1/250, ISO-280

Our creative pathways are not created by the camera gear we own. Our equipment serves as a bridge that allows us to transform the creative sparks we experience on our pathways into the images we create.

Nikon 1 J5 + 1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 @ 35mm, efov 95mm, f/8, 1/1000, ISO-160

Some of us follow and study the work of others with the intent of achieving clarity and inspiration along our own pathways. Without purposeful personal detachment and discernment, risks of conformity and mimicry exist.

Nikon 1 J5 + 1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 @ 10mm, efov 27mm, f/8, 1/200 sec, ISO-160. Monument Valley, Utah.

Others prefer complete creative solitude without any outside influences or references from other photographers.

Nikon 1 J5 + 1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 @ 10mm, efov 27mm, f/8, 1/400, ISO-160

The riches along this solitary, creative road are found by the self-reliant.

Nikon 1 J5 + 1 Nikon 10-100mm f/4-5.6 @ 69mm, efov 186mm, f/5.6 1/8, ISO-3200

Creative pathways are not found in books, manuals, or seminars. They smolder deep inside each of us. Waiting for us to reach inside ourselves to discover and ignite them into our unique creative fires. Once lit internally… they burn brightly.

  1. It’s a nice piece Tom and I find my solace and peace when in nature, if it’s bird photography or macro insects it’s where my mindfulness comes to the fore.
As you are aware my SFN is hell at times and going out with my camera does bring me peace, I have pain in walking to a location but when I am in the moment I am pain free for a split second.

I have always loved birds and animals so trying to capture them gives me an interest, mindfulness, inner peace and solace

    1. Hi Lee,

Not to worry… there will lots of forthcoming articles with images captured with Olympus/OM gear! I specifically used some of my older images to highlight the fact that we can find creative pathways with any kind of camera gear.
