My wife and I visited Three Creeks Trading Co. during a previous trip to the South Island of New Zealand back in 2018.
Unfortunately we had arrived after the company had closed for the day. We were very intrigued with the wealth of photographic opportunities, and captured a number of outdoor images.
During this most recent visit we once again arrived later on in the afternoon… and luckily Three Creeks Trading had not yet closed.
This allowed us to capture some outdoor images, but also explore inside some of the retail spaces with their plethora of interesting items on display… and for sale.
I had the opportunity to speak to the owner and chat about our previous visit. He asked me if I remembered some of the previous items that I had seen and photographed. That led to us going on a very brief journey down memory lane.
During our conversation he mentioned that a number of photography clubs had arranged for field visits to his property. Most of them were primarily interested in the old cars and trucks that were on display. I can certainly understand the appeal this location has for visually oriented folks.
While my wife did some shopping at Three Creeks Trading, I had a bit of time to quickly grab some interior images. If you check the EXIF data you’ll see that I used perspective control adjustments for many of these interior images.
When using a wide angle focal length, I typically spend a bit more time composing my photograph. This helps me get my camera height and angle in the correct positions to help reduce image distortion.
When pressed for time, as I was during this visit, I don’t typically have sufficient time for more exacting compositions. So, I purposely compose my images ‘looser’ to allow for perspective corrections in post processing. The greater the amount of angle distortion that is visible in my viewfinder… the looser I compose my images.
I found a number of unique articles on display that caught my eye… and my shutter finger couldn’t resist… a few sample images follow.
The bulldog statue in the photograph above grabbed my attention. If I would have had room in my luggage to handle the size and weight of it… I would have been very tempted to take out my credit card!
We ended our visit by capturing a final few exterior images. I shot most of these final images while in close to a foreground element.
This resulted in some wide angle distortion which I corrected during post processing.
If you ever find yourself on the South Island of New Zealand driving along Highway 8 between Tekapo and Fairlie, a stop in the village of Burkes Pass to visit Three Creeks Trading Co. is well worth it!
This truly is a “must see” destination. The photographic opportunities abound, and the folks there are both very friendly and informative.
Technical Note
Photographs were captured handheld using camera equipment noted in the EXIF data. All images were created from RAW files using my standard process in post. This is the 1,431 article published on this website since its original inception in 2015.
